if you've never heard the perfectly constructed, logical yet emotional blues-drenched sound of Cannonball Adderley, you really haven't lived. Funky, swinging ,and always a revelation. Show your reverence for one of the greatest to ever put on a reed.

If you play for Miles you better get it right. If you make a cup of tea for Miles, you BETTER get it right.

TWO sugars...
Nicknamed 'The Brute' after he asked Heavyweight Champion of the World Joe Louis to "step outside" after Louis flirted with his girlfriend. Although he could obviously handle himself, his beautiful soft buttery tone could melt you from 100 feet.

Saxophonists today often moan about the 'ergonomics' of old instruments, how they don't like them, hard to play etc. Gerry Mulligan could FLY on that Conn Crossbar baritone, better than you, faster than you. What are you moaning at??

Mulligan.
The original Tenor Saxophone superstar. He wrote the book on Tenor playing. For everyone. Hawk embraced harmonic knowledge and was also embraced by the new school of Be-Boppers as he appreciated where they were coming from. His huge tone would swallow you whole, and if you haven't heard his "Body and Soul" don't talk to us.

One of the purest improvisers in the whole of Jazz. Sonny Rollins could play an 8 hour gig, never stopping playing, then leave the stage playing, play for another 4 hours in the dressing room, then play all the way to and inside the band bus. Then probably in the Hotel room until desperately asked to stop by management. His constant quest for new input, and his constant output are your new inspiration.

Lester Young. "The President". or Prez to his musician friends. Prez had his own way of talking that left many bewildered, and his own way of playing that left most astounded. Star of the count Basie band of the 30's, he was apparently involved in an all-night cutting heads contest with Coleman Hawkins, many regarding him as the victor. He ushered in a new era of Lyrical "horizontal' playing centred around continuous melody. A master of early multiphonics, and a saxophone God. celebrate his glorious legacy.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a meteoric enigma in Jazz. A blind multi- instrumentalist, Kirk was a collector of instruments, styles, and utter respect from anyone who saw him perform. He famously jammed with Jimi Hendrix, and could probably destroy you with a solo from an ear-flute . Remind the world of his genius...

Not your average "Sax" T-shirt. Celebrate the man, not the THING. Sax's genius is nearly incomprehensible if you really delve into his story. His woodwind and brass instruments surpassed rival makers in Paris, causing them to engage in Industrial and Legal espionage to try to stop him. He improved brass instrument designs, invented the modern Bass Clarinet, and generally kicked a** in all areas of instrument fabrication, and the manufacturing processes themselves. He INVENTED modern instrument production. we could go on and on... Oh yeah, he invented the Saxophone too.

..Faster than a speeding bullet, a blistering combination of logic and fluidity on both Alto and Tenor sax. Sonny Stitt sits in the A-Team van with the big boys.

Edward "Tubby" Hayes. Tubbs. The first truly world-class saxophonist from England. Tubbs had supreme facility, great ears, harmonic knowledge and lyricism. Just listen to his battles with Johnny Griffin. We're proud of our Tubbs, remind the world what a beast he was.

Eric Dolphy. Mulit- instrumentalist, and post-Parker influencer. Famous also for quitting the Mingus big band in quiet but spectacular fashion. Another talent lost too young. Remind everyone.

If you haven't read his book "Straight life" you're missing out. Art Pepper was a beautiful Alto player, but so often under appreciated . He had his problems, but hey, we all do.

Albert Ayler, though often categorised with the "Avante Garde" or "Free"schools, actually defied both of these categorisations. He was an enigma, literally doing his own thing; sometimes focussing entirely on tone, sometimes on harmonic/non harmonic elements. A true Jazz warrior , forging his own tools and path.

Leon "CHU" Berry. Not many players get a saxophone named after them (officially or unofficially) but the Conn 'New Wonder' is known by musicians as a Conn CHU BERRY. Chu worked with many of the greats before his life was cut tragically short in a car accident. Charlie Parker named his son Leon after him.

Stan Getz. Legend. Forger of Latin-Jazz. Moody. His confirmed difficulty to deal with is always overshadowed by his beautiful soft tone and the lyrical webs he spun.

The superstar of the Ellington Band, adored by Charlie Parker , another Luminary who wrote the book on Alto playing. Soaring tone, scoops of perfection, taste and class. Enough said. Think of the most beautiful sound you ever heard. It's probably Johnny Hodges.

Joe Henderson was the archetypal hard working Jazz Musician. He recorded with Blue Note, Verve and many others. A great voice who in his later years became a huge influence on his younger contempories. Listen to him "live" to appreciate his greatness.

Piercing tone, steeped in Blues, Hard Bop and Modality. A disciple of Parker, he struggled with addiction, loss of his cabaret card, all the while producing a stunning body of post-Parker work. Celebrate Jackie McClean.

Stalwart of the Ellington band for his entire career, owner of one of the fattest lushest baritone tones ever, Harry Carney is the genesis of modern Baritone playing. Worship him. We do, and so did Duke.

Ornette Coleman was a stellar force in re-thinking jazz harmony, and a catalyst for many movements within the art form . Ornette Coleman sums up a core principle in Jazz and improvisation: be yourself , no matter what.

Pepper Adams was often overshadowed by Gerry Mulligan, although he had an entirely different approach and thunderously edgy tone, earning him the nickname " The Knife". Listen to his timeless intro on Mingus' "Moanin" and you'll know why you need the T-shirt...

Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Allegedly called Lockjaw for his lack of vibratro. A star of the Count Basie band, steeped in r'n'b, bop , Lockjaw had a huge sound and approach. He played with literally every star in the jazz world and later in his life enjoyed his legend status touring Europe and beyond. If you haven't heard Lockjaw in a big band, or in one of his small band settings with other luminaries such as Fats Navarro or Sonny Stitt, , you're missing out. Remind the world of the greats.
