Billie's contribution to Jazz vocals and language is unquestioned. Her song "Strange Fruit" being a true protest song way before the 60's enlightenment of the genre.
More than a jazz vocalist, a trailblazer for having the guts to say what you feel.

Count played the truth, and spoke the truth.
You know deep down, that the originators didn't give a damn about what others thought, they BELIEVED in themselves , their direction, the vision.
Ok, there was lots of poverty involved first, but to be SOMEONE in Jazz, just be YOU.

Nicknamed 'The Brute' after he asked Heavyweight Champion of the World Joe Louis to "step outside" after Louis flirted with his girlfriend.
Although he could obviously handle himself, his beautiful soft buttery tone could melt you from 100 feet.

Cab Calloway ran one of the most successful big bands of the 30's, with many radio friendly hits including the famous "Minnie the Moocher". A hard worker, this quote reflects the knowledge of an artist who knows the business. Most of us are the ordinary ones.

Saxophonists today often moan about the 'ergonomics' of old instruments, how they don't like them, hard to play etc. Gerry Mulligan could FLY on that Conn Crossbar baritone, better than you, faster than you. What are you moaning at??

Cannonballs first wish , from the book "Three Wishes" by Nica de Koenigswarter. Her immediate access to the greatest jazz musicians offered her the chance to ask them all what they would do if they had 3 wishes.
Say no more .
If you've read "Beneath the Underdog" you'll know what a straight talker Charles Mingus was. His opinions on everyone and everything range from hilarious to terrifying.
One thing he could not abide was people copying Charlie Parker, and his vitriol and venom for copyists is well documented.
Remind the world of Mingus' quest for originality.

The original Tenor Saxophone superstar. He wrote the book on Tenor playing. For everyone. Hawk embraced harmonic knowledge and was also embraced by the new school of Be-Boppers as he appreciated where they were coming from.
His huge tone would swallow you whole, and if you haven't heard his "Body and Soul" don't talk to us.

It's on record that Bird wished to travel to europe and study, composers like Varese had spoken to him on such matters. Bird had performed for Stravinsky, throwing in quotes of the composers' motifs, much to Stravinsky's pleasure. Charles Mingus recalled a phone call where Bird improvised over "Rite of Spring" down the phone. Imagine that.
A true artists never thinks they are done.

One of the purest improvisers in the whole of Jazz. Sonny Rollins could play an 8 hour gig, never stopping playing, then leave the stage playing, play for another 4 hours in the dressing room, then play all the way to and inside the band bus. Then probably in the Hotel room until desperately asked to stop by management.
His constant quest for new input, and his constant output are your new inspiration.

Lester Young. "The President". or Prez to his musician friends. Prez had his own way of talking that left many bewildered, and his own way of playing that left most astounded. Star of the count Basie band of the 30's, he was apparently involved in an all-night cutting heads contest with Coleman Hawkins, many regarding him as the victor. He ushered in a new era of Lyrical "horizontal' playing centred around continuous melody.
A master of early multiphonics, and a saxophone God.
celebrate his glorious legacy.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a meteoric enigma in Jazz. A blind multi- instrumentalist, Kirk was a collector of instruments, styles, and utter respect from anyone who saw him perform. He famously jammed with Jimi Hendrix, and could probably destroy you with a solo from an ear-flute .
Remind the world of his genius...
