As the afternoon reaches its peak, the golden Edinburgh stone radiates magic, a bewitching magic that mesmerizes us and fills us with longing. A rare treat indeed is such a day of summer, a day when we can walk in our shirtsleeves and feel the gentle caress of heat. Above, a wide, blue Scottish sky, and from far, far beyond the city, comes the scent of the mountains, fresh and floral. This riot of colour caught my eye and I decided I had to paint it, though even paint cannot do justice to the intense heat and glorious smell. The bush and flowers partially hide an Edinburgh terraced house, unaccustomed perhaps to the very warm weather. There is silence, but for the humming of bees.

St Giles' Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh, Scotland. With its famed crown spire it stands near the top of the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland's chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). Saint Giles - His Bells by Charles Altamont Doyle features Doyle's perception of ghosts as personified memories brought back by the bells as they ring at midnight in the nocturnal sky above St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. His spectral picture of St. Giles exhibits a flow of ghosts haunting the city.

The Dean Village sits quietly below the Dean Bridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith. It has always fascinated me, part Victorian and part Scottish Baronial, quiet, secluded, tranquil. A place for Christmas morning walks, for a cut through to Stockbridge and the haunted St Bernard’s Well. It is achingly pretty, quaint, and calming. This work is rich in heat, in colour and in detail.

Another view from my office window, looking over the rooftops of Edinburgh, Scotland. In the distance can be seen the River Forth and beyond it the Kingdom of Fife. The city is affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie (Scots for Old Smoky), because when buildings were heated by coal and wood fires, chimneys would spew thick columns of smoke into the air. Thankfully, most people have central heating now and the chimneys are just an interesting feature which mostly just provide ventilation.

Free Church of Scotland Assembly Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland. A 19th century church (also known as St Columba's Free Church), situated just off the Royal Mile at the junction of Castlehill, Johnston Terrace and Upper Bow. Designed by Thomas Hamilton, built between 1843-5 with alterations in 1908 by Thomas Ruskin. An Ecclesiastical building still in use as such. Originally called the Free St John's Church, built immediately after the Disruption of 1843. Hamilton's pulpit was sketched by Ruskin, who thought it an 'abomination.' I took a last walk around this area of Edinburgh. The sun was shining again, the heat palpable, and in the air I detected the familiar tang of the hops from the breweries, several miles away. I walked on the quiet street, at the southern fringe of the New Town, fascinated by the symmetry and the evocative implicity of the Georgian buildings. I wanted to capture the play between the light, the colour of the stone, and the splashes of white from the painted walls and window frames. This work is a beautiful souvenir of a Scottish summer, a great gift and a perfect collection to any collection of Edinburgh artwork.
