The Big Wheel on Princes Street, Edinburgh. The wheel is part of the Christmas fair which appears every year at the end of November. Behind the wheel is the monument to Sir Walter Scott. It was built during 1836-46. The architect was George Meikle Kemp (1795-1844), a joiner who entered the competition under a pseudonym to avoid prejudice; the joiner/architect sadly fell into the Union Canal in the fog and drowned before the work was completed.

The former Bank of Scotland headquarters at The Mound, Edinburgh, Scotland. Now headquarters of the merged HBOS, the building has dominated the northern flank of Edinburgh’s Old Town for 300 years. The shot is from Cockburn Street. The Bank of Scotland Headquarters looks down over East Princes Street Gardens. The HQ Building was initiated while Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 - 1811), was Governor of the Bank. The Bank Headquarters was built by architects Robert Reid (1774 - 1856) and Richard Crichton. David Bryce (1803 - 76) refurbished the Interior in 1862 and added new domed wings with a grand replacement central dome. The Bank of Scotland Headquarters were remodelled again in 1929 and 1981.

An old cemetery lying on Calton Hill in Edinburgh which opened in 1718 for the burial of tradesmen and merchants. It was extended in 1767, but divided in 1818 by the building of Waterloo Place (the street at bottom right). The larger part lies to the south of Waterloo Place and includes a number of grand and interesting memorials. An enormous obelisk (shaped liked Cleopatra's needle) by Thomas Hamilton (1784 - 1858) remembers the political martyrs of 1793, who were 'transported' for sedition. The classical monument (the round one) to philosopher David Hume (1711-76) was built in 1777 by Robert Adam (1728-92) and the Emancipation Monument (1893), comprising a bronze of Abraham Lincoln with a grateful freed slave.

The fountain and statue of Greyfriers Bobby is in the centre of the shot, and behind it, an Edinburgh Tour Bus coming up Candlemaker Row. On February 15th 1858 John Grey an Edinburgh Police force night watchman died from tuberculosis and was buried in Greyfriars Church yard. His faithful sky terrier (Bobby) became a local legend because he refused to leave his masters grave. Sir William Chambers (The Lord Provost of Edinburgh) paid Bobby's license and presented him with a collar with a brass inscription "Greyfriars Bobby from the Lord Provost 1867 licensed". The Kelpies , Helix Park, Falkirk are five years old and have had over a million visitors.

It has been years since it got cold enough for long enough in Lowland Scotland for the rivers and lochs to freeze enough for ice skating. But not to worry, it is still possible to ice skate in the open air on the very popular Ice Rink in Edinburgh's East Princes Street Gardens. The rink is built every year as part of the Edinburgh Christmas fair.

Donaldson's College was founded in Edinburgh in 1851 as Donaldson's Hospital by Sir James Donaldson (1751–1830). The original benefaction allowed for special bursaries for poor children bearing the name Donaldson. Not all were deaf, although applications on behalf of deaf children were encouraged. From 1938, pupils were exclusively deaf. This benefaction was similar in style to the benefaction of George Watson, who founded and supported other schools in Edinburgh. Queen Victoria is said to have been jealous of the landmark William Henry Playfair building in Edinburgh, apparently stating that it outclassed some of her palaces.

The Scotch Whisky Experience - Scotland's 5 star premier whisky visitor attraction located on the Royal Mile, at the top of Castle Hill adjacent to Edinburgh Castle and the Camera Obscura is housed in the former Castle Hill School. Princes Mall (formerly Waverly Market and later Waverley Shopping Centre) is a shopping centre in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is located at the East end of Princes Street next to Edinburgh Waverley Railway station. Although once home to a number of independent retailers, it now houses mainly high street chain stores, as well as a large food court. Designed in the early 1980s, it was built primarily underground, with a landscaped plaza at street level, in order to preserve the view from Princes Street across to Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town. The Hub, at the top of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, is the home of the Edinburgh International Festival, and a central source of information on all the Edinburgh Festivals. Its gothic spire - the highest point in central Edinburgh - towers over the surrounding buildings, including the adjacent castle. The building was designed in collaboration by Edinburgh architect J Gillespie Graham, and the famous gothic revivalist Augustus Pugin, and constructed between 1842 and 1845. The inside houses the Hub Cafe; Hub Tickets, the central box office for the International Festival, which also sells tickets for a wide range of other events; a Main Hall with a capacity of 420, used as a venue for concerts and so on; and two smaller venues.

In the Botanical Gardens is to be found the most perfect of Scottish gardens. Flowers and ferns, manicured lawns that remind me of the West Highlands, lavender and heather. Behind is a small house, transported brick by brick from elsewhere. It soothes me here, in this wonderful land of plants and make believe, tucked away behind high stone walls, a domain that existed before I was born and will live on after me. Fleeting memories come to me in the Botanical Gardens, from 50 years ago, of benches where adults sat whilst I deployed my toy soldiers on the flag stones, of wondrous walks through the mini jungles of Victorian hothouses. The work is rich in detail, in colour, and it makes a perfect addition to any collection, a great gift too.
