The Virginia Lancers were a minor league hockey team that played in several leagues from 1983 until 1990. Their home ice was the Vinton Sports Complex. The Virginia were founded as the result of the Nashville South Stars relocating in December 1983, halfway into the 1982–83 season of the ACHL. They would continue to play in the ACHL from 1983 until 1987. Prior to the 1990–1991 season, the name was changed to the Roanoke Valley Rebels.

The Charlotte area has historically been home to several lower-division soccer teams, dating back to the Carolina Lightnin' in the early 1980s. The Lightnin' won the American Soccer League championship in 1981. After the league folded in 1983, the team played for one season as the Charlotte Gold in United Soccer League before ceasing operations.

The California Golden Seals were a professional ice hockey club that competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 to 1976. Initially named the California Seals, the team was renamed the Oakland Seals partway through the 1967–68 season (on December 8, 1967) and then to the California Golden Seals in 1970, after two games as the Bay Area Seals. Based in Oakland, California, they played their home games at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena.

The Phoenix Inferno was an American indoor soccer team in Phoenix, Arizona, that played in the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1980 to 1983. In 1983 new ownership renamed the team the Phoenix Pride. The Pride folded at the end of the 1983–1984 season.

The California Sunshine was an American soccer club based in Fountain Valley, California that was a member of the American Soccer League. Their first season was 1977, but the team folded in 1981 after four seasons.
The California Sunshine was founded with two major philosophies: To field as many American players as possible and to keep profanity off the playing field.
The St. Petersburg Pelicans were one of the eight original franchises that began playing in the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989. They played their home games at Al Lang Stadium in Downtown St. Petersburg, Florida.
The Pelicans went 42-30 in the regular season and won the Northern Division title. Led by Lamar Johnson's home run and three RBI, the Pelicans went on to beat the West Palm Beach Tropics 12-4 to win the league's championship game.
The team returned for a second season but ceased operation when the league folded in December 1990.
The Chicago Hustle was a team in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) from 1978 to 1981. The Hustle played in all three WBL seasons and led the league in attendance each year. The WBL disbanded in 1981 because of financial problems throughout the league.

The Sacramento Gold Miners were a Canadian football team based in Sacramento, California. The franchise was the first American team in the Canadian Football League. The Gold Miners inherited a home stadium, front office staff and much of the roster of the Sacramento Surge from the defunct World League of American Football. The team played its home games at Hornet Stadium. Because the stadium was inadequate and lacking any other nearby replacement, the owner moved the team to San Antonio as the Texans for the 1995 CFL season.
The Birmingham Bulls were a professional ice hockey team based in Birmingham, Alabama. They played in the World Hockey Association from 1976 to 1979 and the Central Hockey League from 1979 to 1981.
Prior to being in Birmingham, the team was known as the Ottawa Nationals and the Toronto Toros.
The Maryland Bays were an inaugural franchise of the third incarnation of the American Soccer League in 1988.They were based in Catonsville, Maryland. The team joined the American Professional Soccer League in 1990 when the ASL merged with the Western Soccer League. After the 1990 season, the club absorbed the Washington Stars, and moved to play in Columbia, Maryland.

The Fort Wayne Flames were an indoor soccer club based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that competed in the American Indoor Soccer Association, playing home games at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum from 1986–1989. The team folded following the 1989 season. Under separate ownership, Fort Wayne was awarded an expansion franchise Indiana Kick, which lasted one additional season (1989–1990).

The Canton Invaders was an indoor soccer club based in Canton, Ohio that competed in the American Indoor Soccer Association and the National Professional Soccer League. The Invaders and the AISA began play in 1984 with six teams (Chicago Vultures, Canton Invaders, Columbus Capitals, Kalamazoo Kangaroos, Louisville Thunder, and Milwaukee Wave). After the 1995–96 season, the team relocated and became the Columbus Invaders.

The Washington Senators baseball team was one of the American League's eight charter franchises. The club was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1901 as the Washington Senators. In 1905, the team changed its official name to the Washington Nationals. The name "Nationals" appeared on the uniforms for only two seasons, and was then replaced with the "W" logo for the next 52 years. However, the names "Senators", "Nationals" and shorter "Nats" were used interchangeably by fans and media for the next 60 years.
The Wichita Wings were a professional indoor soccer franchise based in Wichita, Kansas. The Wings were admitted to the Major Indoor Soccer League as an expansion team on August 21, 1979. When the MISL (which had since been renamed the Major Soccer League) folded in 1992, the Wings moved to the National Professional Soccer League. At the time the Wings folded, after the 2000–2001 season, they were the oldest professional soccer franchise in the United States. Despite having some of the best records in US indoor soccer, the Wings never won a league championship or reached the league finals.

It first competed in the Triple-A American Association (AA) in 1962, moved to the PCL from 1963 to 1968, and returned to the AA from 1969 to 1997. The franchise's original name made reference to the Land Run of 1889, which led to the founding of Oklahoma City.

The Miami Floridians played in the ABA from 1968 through 1970 when they became simply The Floridians. The Los Angeles Strings were a team tennis franchise in World Team Tennis from 1973 to 1978. The Strings played their home matches at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in 1974, before moving to The Forum in Inglewood, California for the 1975 season. The Strings featured Chris Evert as a player and Ilie Năstase as the coach on their 1978 WTT championship team.

The San Francisco Golden Gaters were a charter franchise of World Team Tennis (WTT). The Golden Gaters won two Western Division Championships and lost in the WTT Finals both times. The team was founded in 1973 and made the playoffs in each of the five seasons in which it participated in the league. Following the 1978 season, eight of the then 10 WTT franchises folded leaving only the Golden Gaters and the Phoenix Racquets prepared to participate in the 1979 season. WTT suspended operations of the league in March 1979, ending the Golden Gaters existence.
The Soviets, of the Soviet National Team, played in the World Team Tennis League in 1977. The team originally was going to be based in Pennsylvania and be called the Keystones, but it never materialized. The Soviets played just one season. Later, the franchised moved again and became the Anaheim Oranges.

The New York Apples were a charter franchise of World Team Tennis (WTT). The team was originally known as the New York Sets to match the names of other successful New York sports teams including the New York Mets, the New York Jets, and the New York Nets. They won the 1976 WTT championship under that name led by Billie Jean King. Prior to the 1977 season, the defending champion Sets held a contest to choose a new name for the team, and Apples was selected. With their new name, the Apples produced the same results winning their second consecutive WTT title in 1977. On October 27, 1978, the Apples folded after their fifth season. WTT suspended operations of the league shortly thereafter.
World Team Tennis (WTT) was a professional tennis league that was founded in 1973 by a group including Larry King, who, at the time, was married to Billy Jean King, herself the most famous female tennis player. The league grew to as many as 10 teams during the 1975 season but eventually folded in 1978.
