The Kentucky Colonels were a member of the American Basketball Association for all of the league's nine years (1967-1976). The name is derived from the historic Kentucky colonels, a honorary title given by the state to people with noteworthy accomplishments. The Colonels won the most games and had the highest winning percentage of any franchise in the league's history, but the team did not join the NBA in the 1976 ABA–NBA merger.

The team were members of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) from 1980 to 1982. The team was previously known as the Utica Olympics.
The Columbus Horizon was a defunct basketball team from Columbus, Ohio that played for five seasons in the Continental Basketball Association from 1989 to 1994.
The team was founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors, a charter member of the Basketball Association of America, named after the Philadelphia Warriors, an old basketball team who played in the American Basketball League in 1925. The Warriors played in Philly from 1946 to 1962.

The Birmingham Bandits were a professional basketball team based in Birmingham, Alabama. They played 1 season, 1991-1992, in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), the defunct development league for the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The New Jersey Gems were one of eight founding franchises in the pioneering Women’s Professional Basketball League in the winter of 1978-79. The WPBL was the first professional basketball league for women in the United States. Of the eight original clubs, the Gems were one of only three to survive for all three of the league’s seasons.

The Quad City Thunder were a Continental Basketball Association franchise that was based in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. They played in the CBA from the 1987–88 season until the CBA folded in 2001. The Thunder won the CBA championships in the 1993–94 and 1997–98 seasons, and runner-up in the 1990–91 season. The Thunder played in Moline, Illinois, first at Wharton Field House before moving to the new MARK of the Quad Cities in 1993.
The Virginia Squires was a basketball team based in Norfolk, Virginia, and playing in several other Virginia cities. They were members of the American Basketball Association from 1970 to 1976.
The team originated in 1967 as the Oakland Oaks, an ABA charter franchise based in Oakland, California. They moved to Washington, D.C. as the Washington Caps in 1969 but moved to Norfolk the following year, becoming the Squires. The Fort Wayne Fury was a professional basketball team in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) from 1991 through the cessation of the CBA on February 8, 2001. The team played at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Fury finished as the league's runner-up in the 1996 season. Former members of the team include former Indiana University standouts Damon Bailey and Greg Graham, NBA guard/forward Stephen Jackson, former multiple-time World Heavyweight Championship (professional wrestling) wrestler Kevin Nash, and Percy Miller, better known as the rapper, "Master P".

From 1979-80, they were called the Hawaii Volcanos. The team name is spelled "Volcanos," even though the proper plural spelling for volcano would be "volcanoes."
The Rapid City Thrillers were a semi-professional basketball team in Rapid City, South Dakota, that competed in the Continental Basketball Association from 1984 to 1997, and then in the International Basketball Association in 1998.
The Minnesota Muskies were a member of the American Basketball Association, born with the league's creation on February 2, 1967. The team played one season in Minnesota before moving to Miami, Florida to become The Floridians. The team colors were blue and gold and games were played in the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota.
The Chicago Hustle was a team in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) from 1978 to 1981. The Hustle played in all three WBL seasons and led the league in attendance each year. The WBL disbanded in 1981 because of financial problems throughout the league.
