Moving against the grain, almost always creates divots. Moving with the grain is always smoother.

AGAINST THE GRAIN, meaning: when you do or say something that is opposite to what other people do or say or opposite to what you usually do or say.

Walking in Swiss alpine meadow in summer is a delight especially is the weather is good. Here I saw a small craftsman cottage in Alpine style with wood curing in the sun. The grain was attractive with the wooden plank in golden colours. I wondered what it would be used for? Knots in a piece of timber give the wood character and reminds us that it came for a living tree. Knots are not weaknesses but part of natures unique display.
