Nineteen Eighty-Four is a rare work that grows more haunting as its futuristic purgatory becomes more real. Published in 1949, the book offers political satirist George Orwell's nightmarish vision of a totalitarian, bureaucratic world and one poor stiff's attempt to find individuality. The brilliance of the novel is Orwell's prescience of modern life—the ubiquity of television, the distortion of the language—and his ability to construct such a thorough version of hell. Required reading for students since it was published, it ranks among the most terrifying novels ever written.

The Ministry of Truth (Newspeak: Minitrue) is the ministry of propaganda. In a dystopian, polluted, over consumerist, hyper-bureaucratic alternative present day, Sam Lowry is a low-level government employee who frequently daydreams of himself as a winged warrior saving a damsel in distress. One day shortly before Christmas a fly becomes jammed in a teleprinter, misprinting a copy of an arrest warrant it was receiving resulting in the arrest and accidental death during interrogation of cobbler Archibald Buttle instead of renegade heating engineer and suspected terrorist Archibald Tuttle because Buttle's heart condition didn't appear on Tuttle's medical files that were provided to Information Retrieval.

George Orwell's concept of "thought policing" derived from the intellectual self-honesty shown by a person's "power of facing unpleasant facts".

George Orwell, born Eric Blair in India in 1903, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic. He is known for his visionary works such as Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-four, as well as his non-fiction classics Down and Out in Paris in London, The Road to Wigan Pier, and Homage to Catalonia.

I am a citizen of a dystopian society in the year 1984. I live in a world where freedom of thought and expression is suppressed by a totalitarian government. I am constantly monitored by the government and am expected to conform to its strict rules and regulations. I am constantly under the watchful eye of Big Brother and am expected to follow the Party's doctrine without question. I live in a world of fear, mistrust, and paranoia, where the government controls every aspect of my life.
