Snake Bird. Devil Bird. Water turkey. Anhinga. Whatever you call it. These birds are a familiar sight to any outdoorsman in the south eastern coastal areas of the US, or coastal areas of central and South America. You may recognize them as the birds pooping on your head while out bank fishing.

Featured in: Close ups in Nature The Anhinga, unlike other diving birds, has no oil on it's feathers and has to dry it's feathers before it can fly again. It is also known as "the snake bird" because it swims with it's body submerged and with only it's long neck and head showing is often mistaken for a snake when seen at a distance.

This is my drawing of an Anhinga water bird, sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter or water turkey.

Posing Anhinga by Debra Martz Well, not actually posing as it had been busy preening its backside. I thought I would never get a photo of its head looking forward but finally did! Note the tiny white feather atop its beak from all the preening it had been doing. Adult male Anhingas are black with silvery to white streaks but the females and immatures, like this one, have a pale tan head, neck, and breast. The bill, legs, and feet are yellowish orange. It was interesting to see this Florida bird, an Anhinga, lounging around on top of the decoy. Eventually it spread it's wings and flew off.

What would Wildlife have to say ~ if it had 'a chance' to speak...??? Well for the oriental darters of Brunei Darussalam ~ they'd probably say "please can someone take these bird nets left by unscrupulous poachers down from the water-lands". Surely it's time that *WILDLIFE had a VOICE* in Brunei Darussalam...? They certainly deserve more RESPECT within the Sultanate...
