Ardre VIII Runestone - historical scandinavian viking age Tapestry
Runestone Tapestry
designed and sold by MacSquiddles
The largest and most well-known of the stones is the Ardre VIII stone. It dates to the eighth or ninth century and depicts Norse mythological events such as the Lay of Weyland the blacksmith, Thor fishing for Jörmungandr, Loki being punished for killing Baldr, and Odin riding Sleipnir to Valhalla. Since they do not correspond to any known Norse stories that have persisted to the current day, other images on this stone, such as the lady wielding two swords on the right, are now unknown. A scene from the Verhogdal tapestry No. III from Härjedalen is reminiscent of the longboat design on the image-stone with its mariners. This stone has mostly been examined by Ludwig Buisson.
