Bob Brooks 7 Seas night club was a pre-tiki establishment (although they did have both physical tikis and tiki graphics in their menu and advertising...so a case could be made they they were full-blown tiki earlier than many think), originally opened at 6904 Hollywood Boulevard by Ray Haller in 1935. Capitalizing on the popularity of the South Pacific as a dream vacation destination, Haller borrowed ideas from the popular Don the Beachcomber club a few blocks away and decorated the 7 Seas with a collection of tropical plants, nautical items, lava rocks, and other items of decor that fit the Polynesian theme. The most notable feature was a corrugated tin roof upon which nightly tropical rain storms--complete with thunder and lightning.

Tangeroa Ru, Goddess of the East Wind, and her sister Hina Kaluua travel together, wind and rain. They journey across the 7 Seas, and the Tangeroa Ru' M is the home to the best imaginary tropical drinks that have ever been had at a non-existent bar ever.

The World Famous Seven Seas Restaurant in California Tiki Bar

spray paint the walls. The Tiki has had a greater influence on the modern art world than many realize. The 20th century saw a rise in American’s fascination with the Pacific Islands and their native culture. Images of the traditional life of native islanders captivated the residents of the Continental U.S. and brought about a desire to fill their mundane environment with some of the iconography of the islands. Post World War II returning GI’s brought back images of the Pacific Islands and the fascination with Tiki emerged. By the 1960s Tiki could be seen everywhere. It adorned buildings, restaurants, motels and all manner of advertising. Exports of authentic Tiki could not keep up with the demand.

1930-40s Era Fresno, California The Morgue bar-nightclub

After returning to America in the 1950s from living abroad, Stephen Crane opened The Luau, a Polynesian-themed restaurant on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Quickly becoming a celebrity hotspot, the Luau was known for its innovative tiki decor and its high-profile customers. As the host and owner, Crane became a well-known name in the restaurant industry and tongue in cheek signed his menus as "STEFOOMA, High-Talking Chief of the Luau" in an attempt to keep up with the storied personas of Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic. Crane expanded his company, Stephen Crane Associates, which at one point included over a dozen different restaurants.

This pre-tiki establishment was open at least as early as 1945. Before this, in 1943, it was home to the Rose Bowl. Hy Ginnis, the original host, died in 1955. Art Adler took over soon after. It was located on Chicago's Rush Street which was quite notorious at the time for gambling, prostitution, and all sorts of debauchery. The exterior was marked by huge neon vertical letters spelling out "TRADE WINDS". By the 1960s, this location housed the Whiskey A Go Go.
