A Corner Of Hull

A former warehouse, now flats, on the river Hull. The windows reflect the wintery light, solid walls of brick, little clues to the building's origins. I love this spot, an oasis of peace, strangely timeless. Behind is the High Street, cobbled, a patch of old Hull, and beyond the fence the muddy, shallow river that terrified me as a child. This work is a great souvenir of Hull, a fantastic gift.

A lovely white stuccoed shop, a barber’s, sits quietly in the light of dawn, waiting for customers. The street is deserted, the windows hinting only at life within. I liked the patchwork of colours, squares of white, of milky coffee, lines of pink and blue. The sky is warm, suggesting a hot day to come, a day full of hope and joy. This work would make a wonderful gift and a great addition to any collection.

A corner of London, where the light bounces off the white stucco and the sky is a cool blue, jacket weather, air that bites. A day of freedom, a day of walking and exploring, seeking out quiet streets, forgotten it seems, but the day is early. This work depicts a café on a street corner, a gentle game of shadow and light, seeped in blue and white. A perfect souvenir of London.

Edinburgh on a beautiful day of summer, a day filled with glorious Scottish sun, when the stone absorbs light and the city lives up to its unofficial title of Athens of the North. I walk alone, along streets, and crescent, and through squares, familiar and unchanged since childhood, inhaling the city’s scent. It is fresh, filled with flowers and with the thick, malty smell of distant breweries. It feels timeless, Eden-like, dreach wet days of fog, sleet and rain forgotten and forgiven. I want time to stand still, for the day of sun and light to never end. The crescent sweeps round, creating an illusion of infinity. The work is rich in light and colour, with satisfying detail. A row of Victorian houses, the pinnacle of English solidity, faces the sea at Clacton. The sky is blue, full of brine and ozone, a tinge of vinegar and frying chips. Seagulls sing and crow, and from the sea comes the gentle sound of waves. Childhood memories, Proustian triggers of colour and taste, happy innocence, infantile joy and freedom. I was struck by the colours of the houses, by their height and stature. Decades of history preserved in brick, of grandeur and fall.

An Italian house in summer, a villa of one’s dreams, seeped with cleansing lights, its stone warm to the touch; a house hidden and shrouded with mystery within the embrace of its walls. The garden adds coolness, a veil of delicious greenery infusing the grounds with the citric scent of lemon, and with the sweetness of oleander, honeysuckle and rose. It is indeed the house of one’s dreams, a moment or two of pure joy, the contemplation of promise, that the Italian summer will return again soon. This work makes a wonderful gift, or the perfect reminder of the joys of travel.

A walk in Chicago takes me to a bar, a former warehouse. I am struck by the water cistern on the roof, both iconic and nostalgic, its shape reminiscent of a film set. I am happy to be in America again, in this vast land, in the setting of my dreams. I feel free, alive, keen to explore the Metropolis with its elevated trains that cut through Art Deco skyscrapers, and its seemingly endless districts. This work is full of American atmosphere, fresh and alive with colour and light. A perfect souvenir, an ideal gift.

A place that never seems to change, that always offers the same, a simple choice, to be taken or left, over decades. I cannot remember when I first saw this café and I don’t think I have ever eaten here, but I am glad it exists, an anchor, a source of Proustian scent, of bacon, toast, grease and coffee. I pause to look at the choices, taunting myself, mulling the range of cheese sandwiches, ham, peanut butter and more. Beyond London stretches outwards, and I make ready to move on, into Bloomsbury or up to Kings Cross. But for this moment I inhale once more the scent of the full English. A lovely gift from London, a fantastic souvenir, rich in detail, in colour and in atmosphere.

A white cottage, the lapping Mediterranean breaking the silence of midday, along with the gentle hum of bees. The heat is palpable, like a caress, stopping us in our tracks. I am struck by the vivid pink colours in front of me, by the wall of flowers and the matching pink, wooden door. This colourful work makes an ideal gift, a perfect collection starter, a great souvenir.

As an infant I was taken hand in hand down this street, wrapped up and scared of the Victorian infant school that was my destination. I could hear the bells of the Minster peel over the rooftops, soon to become my lost universe. I wanted to stay at home, or at least limit my outing to the delights of the ice cream shop in the North Bar, or the tudor tearooms where I would get cakes. I wanted to peel away to run around the supermarket that sold toffees and to Woolies for cheap toys. In later years I returned to this magical place, to paint, to explore. And I dream it might once more become my refound universe. The work focuses on the corner of Lady Gate, the name itself dripping with fascination.

Near The Prison, Hull

On a day of crisp spring, I arrived at the vineyard. It seemed Spanish, ancient, a place of delicious shade and a splash of mystery. A fountain splashed playfully, Tivolian in beauty. And despite the shade, the light was intense in places, white. The walls, ochre, orange, brown, merging in colour. A place to sip fruity, rich, deep wine. A place to spend time, to linger, to contemplate. This work is rich in detail and light, a perfect souvenir of California.

This work depicts a street corner in London, a place made remarkable by its eclectic architecture, a place of magic where turrets pierce the blue sky, garrets and glimpses into a dozen private worlds. I marvel at the contrasting colours, reddish and ochre Victorian brick, seeped in hundred year old soot, and smooth walls of burgundy plaster. The work is rich in colour, in realism and makes a perfect gift of London.

A walk through Paris, and as usual I spot the Eiffel Tower, appearing on the horizon, a beacon and a symbol. For most Parisians, an everyday occurrence, but the sight of this icon always fills me with childish excitement. Greenery, shade, sky, elegant and unaffordable buildings mix. The simple joy of being in Paris. The work is a cheerful reminder of the City of Lights. A perfect gift.

The sign outside says Men Only. It intrigues me, in this neighbourhood of transience and movement. I look up at the Americana, the fire escape and redstone, the neon, and the patch of sky. It is an evocative scene, and I wonder about those who enter and leave here. This work is unusual, colourful and striking and makes a great addition to any collection of American works, and a great gift too.
