We were driving along the Park Road in Cedar Breaks National Park, between overlooks, when this scene came into view! I loved the yellows and greens along the edge leading to the orange and reds of the earth below and the mountains fading off in the distance. This is my watercolor painting of the famous Monument Valley, which is located on the Arizona and Utah state line. This park is a filming location for Western movies. In this painting are the West Mitten Butte, East Mitten Butte and Merrick Butte. I included a cowboy with horse on the John Ford point. Salt was used for the special effects on the rocks and mountains.

Bear Crossing at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico by Debra Martz Leaving the Chiflo stop, travel another approximate one mile south into the Wild Rivers Recreation Area and you come to the stop for Bear Crossing. This is one of a few trails that I have not hiked here. It is outside of the fee area and the does not receive the same level of upkeep that the longer trails do which are within the fee area. This trail is rated as Extremely Difficult and within 25 feet at the beginning of the trailhead I always turn around with a same thought, " still not for me!" Located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, The Toadstools offers a great place to explore. The balanced rock formations here look like mushrooms and offer awe-inspiring views that enchant. The toadstools are easy to access along an easy to moderate 1.5-mile round-trip hike.

Western View from Brian Head Peak - Cedar Breaks - Utah It seemed the views were never ending from Brian Head Peak in Cedar Breaks National Monument. At an elevation of 11,307 you can see for miles and miles and miles. This point of view is from the western edge of the peak with part of the Dixie National Forest just below to the right and Bryce Canyon in the far distance on the horizon to the left. Sheeps Crossing Overlook to East Rim Trail at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico by Debra Martz The Sheep Crossing Overlook is the first pull-out you will see after entering the Wild Rivers Recreation area of Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument. The East Rim Trail begins here (there is a gate to get past the fence) and follows along the edge of the Rio Grande Gorge for more than three miles. The trail is an in and out and joins a two-track road at times. It is mostly level with a few ups and downs. Bear Crossing trail into the gorge to the Rio Grande River is one of two trails here that I've not hiked. It is rated Extremely Difficult and you don't have to venture out on the trail very far to find it is rated correctly. The average drop into the gorge from most of the trails is 800' and takes you through towering Ponderosa Pines. Labyrinth at Montoso Campground Wild Rivers New Mexico by Debra Martz Over the years we have camped at a number of the campsites at Wild Rivers Recreation, a part of the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument north of Questa, New Mexico. This year, however, no camping due to the Covid19 pandemic so we just revisited the many sites and trails. This unicursal labyrinth has been here many years and was just behind the covered picnic table the year we camped at the Montoso camping area. I never did get the story as to when or why but it seems to be appreciated as noone has disturbed it over the many years.
