It's relatively difficult to find, compared to marvels such as Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi palace, the Basilica Cistern, that are very close the one to the other, but it's an absolute "must see"!!! It's mostly famous for its fantastic mosaics (considered the best sample of late Byzantine art, also know as "The Palaeologian Renaissance") but you can also see some fantastic frescoes, like this one. Hagia Sophia, is one of the most important monuments of Istanbul and definitely the most emblematic of the Byzantine Era. It is considered the epitome of the Byzantine architecture and one of its most impressive elements is its magnificent dome, with a diameter of 32 meters, standing 52 meters above ground level. The dome seems to be standing on thin air, as there are no columns to support it. During the Ottoman Era it was turned into a mosque and finally it became a museum in the modern Turkish state. The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii) was constructed between 1606 and 1616 by Mehmet Aga, who had trained with Sinan, the greatest architect of the Ottoman Era. Sultan Ahmet's ambition was to create a monument that could stand up to the grandeur of Hagia Sofia, right opposite to the mosque and it seems that his effort was succesful, although the construction, technically speaking is not as "bold" and "risky" structure as Hagia Sofia was some 1.000 years before. The streets of Istanbul... Always busy, always noisy, sometimes chaotic, always colourful, always interesting and with countless hidden "corners"... But, from all the streets of Istanbul, l prefer the "water roads", the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, with hundreds of boats and ships, going up and down, all day long,one of the most impressive spectacles in this majestic city! Build in 537AD, the Hagia Sophia has been used as a Greek Orthodox Church, an imperial Mosque, and a museum.

Any historian of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire knows the significance of the year 1453. That was the year the empire dissolved after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire. This funny history t-shirt makes a great gift for any Byzantine or Palaiologos Dynasty fan.
