Most of our Christmas traditions have their roots in Viking culture where the time of year for decorated trees and garland was knows as Yule or Jol. Even Santa’s elves have their history in the folklore of the Vikings where elves and dwarves played a prominent role. This Yule Elf is done in a Viking artwork style and is what is called a “godmask.” Celebrate the Yule season Viking style!

The uprising was the armed insurrection that started the process that eventually led to Irish Independence from Great Britain and the partition of the island of Ireland into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Fenrir (or Fenris) is a gigantic, monster wolf of Norse Viking folklore. Fenrir is a child of the Norse god Loki, and is responsible for gobbling up the god Odin WHOLE during the events of Ragnarok. Fenrir is so ferocious that only a magical chain forged by the dwarves can bind him. The god Tyr (represented by the rune that looks like an arrow in this image) had his right hand bitten off by Fenrir. This image shows Fenrir breaking free of the magical dwarven chains that bind him.

Celtic Cross

The ancient Irish writing of ogham reads “tip of the spear” on the spear shaft. The runes around the image read “all our hopes and dreams travel with you” because, as stated above, your existence represents the summation, the grand total of all the lives and actions before you.

Offering ale, wine, or mead to the gods, the dead, or spirits has been a part of ritual and religion for millennia. It’s a practice that spreads across much of history and culture. It’s a powerful expression used to bring together communities in a reaffirmation of beliefs and values. My knotwork-style representation of this type of offering depicts two warriors hoisting their drinking horns to the sky!

Almost all cultures have special words or toasts to acknowledge the activity of bonding with others over drinks. The Celtic and Norse tribes were no exception. Fermented beverages played an important role in rituals and sacrifices. It brought people together to help create a sense of comradery and community. Mead and ale took on an almost supernatural power as they are often referenced in sagas and mythology. Mead was referred to as the “nectar of the gods.” Much of the Saxon epic poem Beowulf is set in a mead hall. So raise your drink, and toast to the long held traditions of the past. Skál! Sláinte! Cheers!

White stags have played a role in many mythologies and legends, especially in the North. The Celts believed them to be messengers from the otherworld. The white stag’s appearance would be an omen for whoever sighted it. The legends of King Arthur indicated that the white stag had a supernatural ability to avoid capture, and pursuit of the magical beast was akin to a spiritual quest.

The design depicts this monstrous canine of Northern European lore in a classic Nordic style with knots and patterns everywhere, but with a contemporary twist. The colors are distressed to give an aged appearance.

Celtic Art

This is an artistic rendition of a clan of Celtic warriors on the march to battle! I leave it open to interpretation what tribe of Celts these guys are. They could be Gauls or Britons on the march to kick some Roman butt. They could be Picts on the march to battle with invading Saxons. They could be Gaels looking to put down a rival clan. Regardless of how you see it, the ogham inscription at the center sews a common thread among all interpretations. It reads, “VICTORY!”

Pagans, fearless warriors, brutal. Many words were used by their enemies but in the end, the Celtic legends continue. Share your pride as a celt.

Show off your Breton pride!

Thor, son of Odin, god of Thunder, protector of Midgard. Thor was a popular Norse god among the common farmers of Scandinavia and other Germanic speaking cultures as he was a protector of the people. Thor’s magical war hammer, Mjölnir, is the centerpiece of my artwork here. Mjölnir pendants were worn by many including the Vikings in the Middle Ages as a symbol of Thor’s protection and strength. Thor continues to be a popular figure in modern culture.
