Founded as Charles Auto Supply in 1934, Charles would go on to open a dozen locations throughout the greater Washington Metro area, subsequently changing their name to Charles Auto Supply Stores. The retailer’s initial offerings were basic repair parts and supplies, but by the time the boys began coming home from WWII and began hot rodding their cars, the Charles stores began adding speed parts and go fast goodies. Streamline was Charles' house brand for several products, including their 'Hi-Speed Motor Oil.' By the late ’70s, dedicated speed shops and national auto parts supply stores were putting the squeeze on Charles Auto Supply Stores, and they struggled throughout the ’80s before closing up shop some time in the ’90s.

Dreamland cinema opened on the 22nd of March 1935, showing Richard Boleslawski’s The Painter Veil, starring Greta Garbo. It was built as part of the Dreamland amusement park by the remarkable John Henry Iles, who also developed the nearby Lido at Cliftonville. The cinema was inspired by the modernism of German cinema design. The building also influenced Oscar Deutsch and his many Odeon cinemas. In my artwork, I have attempted to return the building to the same state as on its opening night.

The Tivoli was the modernist cultural hub of Mumbles, Wales and opened in 1939. However just two years earlier this version of the building was approved, but never built.

That cover model was never heard from again.

A fairly steep front view of the building. You can just see the letters of the neon sign reflected in the windows. The Coliseu is a major cultural centre in Porto and is a very good example of Portuguese Streamline Moderen and Art Deco. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it houses a theatre which can accommodate 3,500 people standing and 2.955 seated. Nikon D750 with Nikkor 24-120 F4.
