The Akechi clan (明智) is a branch of the Toki clan, which is descended from the Seiwa Genji, thrived around the later part of the Sengoku period. The clan is known for the Head of clan, Akechi Mitsuhide who trapped Nobunaga at Honnō-ji and forced him to commit suicide. The Akechi then gained power due to the collapse of the Oda clan. Later that same year, Akechi Mitsuhide was slain at the Battle of Yamazaki, twelve days after the Incident at Honnō-ji. The Akechi clan then fell from prominence. The Saito clan (斎藤) was a Japanese samurai kin group from Echizen Province. The clan claimed descent from Fujiwara Toshihito. Saito Dosan (1494–1556) was the father-in-law of Oda Nobunaga. Dosan was attacked by his own son, Saito Yoshitatsu, and died in battle. Later, the son of Yoshitatsu, Tatsuoki was defeated by Oda Nobunaga in 1564, and the clan disappeared. The Kuroda clan (黒田) was a Japanese samurai clan which came to prominence during the Sengoku period. In the 16th century, the Kuroda clan was located in Harima Province. Under the headship of Kuroda Yoshitaka, the clan served the Oda and later Toyotomi clans. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Kuroda Yoshitaka and his son Nagamasa supported Ieyasu in combat against Mitsunari Western Army, and were rewarded for their service with a transfer to the Fukuoka Domain. The Shibata clan (柴田) was a Japanese clan that had originated during the Heian period (12th century) of Japan. The Shibata clan of Echigo province were notably related to that of the Shibata clan of Owari province. The Shibata clan of Echigo were descended from Sasaki Moritsuna, a supporter of Minamoto no Yoritomo and a son of Sasaki Hideyoshi. The Shibata later became retainers of the Nagao clan, which was under control by the famed Uesugi Kenshin. After Shibata Shigeie died during the year of 1587, the Shibata clan attempted to break away from the Uesugi. After this, the clan of Echigo became extinct, never to be seen again. The Chosokabe clan (長宗我部) was a Japanese samurai kin group associated with Tosa Province in modern-day Kōchi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. The clan claims descent from Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China. The clan is known for the 21st daimyo of the clan, Chosokabe Motochika who unified Shikoku in sengoku jidai. Ouchi clan (大内) was one of the most powerful and important families in Japan during the reign of the Ashikaga shogunate in the 12th to 14th centuries. Their domains, ruled from the castle town of Yamaguchi, comprised six provinces at their height, and the Ouchi played a major role in supporting the Ashikaga in the Nanboku-cho Wars against the Imperial Court. The Ouchi remained powerful up until the 1560s, when they became eclipsed by their vassals, the Mori clan. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Ouchi clan, Ouchi bhisi (大内菱) or “Ouchi Diamond”. The Ii clan (井伊) is a Japanese clan which originates in Totomi Province. It was a retainer clan of the Imagawa family, and then switched sides to the Matsudaira clan of Mikawa Province. The Azai clan (浅井) was a line of daimyos during Japan’s Sengoku jidai that was based in Omi Province (present day Shiga Prefecture). The Azai clan, along with the Asakura clan, opposed Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century. They were defeated by him at the Battle of Anegawa in 1570, and all but eliminated when their home castle, Odani Castle, was taken three years later.
