In 2014, this painting was among one of the winners of a BBC America Fanart contest. It was a difficult contest, as the contest required fan art for the 12th Doctor before any episodes had aired. The painting was on display at the Doctor Who booth at the San Diego Comic-Con and the Doctor Who World Tour premier of Series 8. Two weeks after I won this contest, a trailer for Series 8 was released that focused on Clara’s reflection in the 12th Doctor’s eye. I’m not saying I inspired the trailer, but the reps at BBC America were certianly impressed with the apparent clairvoyance. It was a proud moment. The original oil painting is on a 36" by 24" canvas. This was a great scene in Season 9 of Doctor Who when we finally learned why the Doctor has the face of a person he saved long ago. (Peter Capaldi first appeared in Doctor Who in Season 4 during the Fires of Pompeii.) Later in that episode, the Doctor says something that I found particularly apt: "But you see, that's the trouble with viewing reality through technology - it's all too easy to feed in a new reality." I've watched 'The Girl Who Died' a half dozen times in the week after it aired, which isn't unusual for me after every new episode. Heaven Sent from Doctor Who season 9 is a masterpiece of storytelling. The visuals and directing are incredible, but the story is what shines. I'm particularly fond of the shepherd boy's tale used to illustrate the billions of years the Doctor spent in the clockwork, puzzle hell running from the veil. The metaphor - a bird sharpens its beak on a granite mountain once every 100 years or so, and the time it takes for the mountain to be worn down from the sharpening of birds beaks...is one second in eternity - has often been used in literature. James Joyce uses it, most notably, in 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.'

The Twelfth Doctor is an anomaly. We call him the 12th Doctor, but he's the 13th version of the Doctor. Also, Time Lord biology only allows them to regenerate 12 times, but he was technically the 13th regeneration. (The 10th Doctor regenerated twice and the War Doctor was a secret regeneration. The numbers are all off, but we Whovians accept it because it fits in with the Timey Whimy absurdities of the show.) The Doctor should have died of old age at the end of the 11th Doctor's run when he spent a thousand years on Trensalore. But the Time Lords intervened, using a crack in the universe from the bubble universe that they're trapped in, and granted the Doctor another regeneration cycle, which they can do because this is a show about tim...

I made this on the question: What does the Doctor see when he/she sees a reflection? Existentially, it must be complicated when you've regenerated so many times and had so many faces. This is one of my most popular pieces online, which means that it had some controversy. Particularly the fact that I seemed to have left the 9th Doctor out. I wanted to include Eccelston. I also wanted to include all the other Doctors, but it wasn't feasible, so I left Easter eggs instead. Apparently, that wasn't enough for some people and they thought I was trying to erase the 9th Doctor from the canon, which is just stupid.
